FTP problems?
1) Log into the manager section of your 50megs.com account. At the top is a link that says "CLICK HERE TO ENABLE FTP". Simply click this link one time and it will activate FTP access for your account. You need never click the link again.
2) At this point you can ftp into your account. To do this you must know what server your are on. If your URL(The web address that begins with http://) starts with users, then you are users server. If your URL starts with www3 then you are on the www3 server and so on. Anyway, if are a part of the www3 server then your FTP address would be www3.50megs.com. You can FTP directly in, or use a program such as cute ftp, or ws ftp. To do this you will need your 50megs.com username and password. Your FTP username and password are the same as your 50megs.com username and password login.
3) Remember that your FTP address is NOT with your username attached on the end, nor is it with http:// at the beginning. So your webpage was located at http://www4.50megs.com/frank, your ftp address/hostname for this account would be www4.50megs.com .
4) If your FTP software asks for a base directory, or a starting directory just leave it blank.
Thats it, please let us know if you experience any problems at all.
I get a page that says "If you are getting this screen it means you are getting the default index.html file." when I type in my URL. What does this mean?
What this means is that when you create your account 50megs.com creates a default index.html file in your account. When you type in your url to your sites (Example: www4.50megs.com/henry) 50megs.com will look for a file called index.html in your directory. So, www4.50megs.com/henry is really the same as typing www4.50megs.com/henry/index.html. This index.html file is what gives you the message about getting the default index.html file. To get rid of this and put on your own page in its place follow the simple instructions below.
1) First delete the index.html file by logging in to your 50megs.com account and going to the FILE MANAGER and checking the box next to index.html and clicking on DELETE FILE button located at the bottom. This will delete the index.html in your account.
2) Next you need to upload your files to the 50megs.com server. You can do this by using FTP (Look at question #1 for instructions on FTP), or you can use the browser upload available in the 50megs.com file manager.
3) Then you need to change your main HTML file that is going to be your main page to be called index.html or index.htm, the computer searches for index.html first and if it can't find an index.html file then searches for index.htm. Either name is just fine to use. Make sure that the name is in ALL LOWERCASE letters. This is very important. In Linux (Which 50Megs.com is run on) all filenames are case sensitive meaning that Index.html and index.html are two totally different files. This is not the case in Windows 9x, or Windows NT. If you accidently named your file with a capital letter you can easily make it all lowercase by going to the FILE MANAGER. Find your main HTML file and select it with the check mark. Click on RENAME FILE located at the bottom, and type in index.html or index.htm (Lower case letters). That's all.
4) If your main HTML file is called main.html for example you don't HAVE to name it index.html (Or index.htm). You can just use the URL to point specifically to the file you want to run. Example (www3.50megs.com/username/main.html)
Now it looks for main.html not index.html or index.htm. However, most people when surfing the net type in just the directory of where they are going and not a specific file so its probably a good idea to name your main file index.html or index.htm. For instance, you don't usually go to www.microsoft.com/mainpage.html. Instead you would just like to type www.microsoft.com - Which in turn really loads www.microsoft.com/index.html. I hope this clears up questions you might have regarding questions about index.html files.
I use frames and have a banner in every frame? Can I fix this?
We understand that you don't want banners in every frame. We have devised a way to ensure that your frames pages will still look nice on a 50megs.com server. If you use frames you can turn on popup windows for your site. This will eliminate the banners from your page(s) completely and cause a single popup banner to appear no matter how many frames you have open. To do this follow the simple instructions below.
1) Simply add the code <nobanner> to all of your HTMl files that you don't want a banner on. The code can be inserted anywhere in your HTML. This will create a pop-up window to appear instead of the banners. Make sure that you add the <nobanner> tag to all of the pages that you don't want a banner on.
2) After you add the <nobanner> on the pages then reupload them over your old ones your problem should be fixed.
Can I host my business site on 50Megs.com?
1) Yes, we allow you to host business sites, as well as any other type of site that you want except sites with adult content (Nudity). We also do not allow sites that store illegal files of any kind including MP3 files, and warez (Pirated Software).
Do you support cgi scripts?
1) We don't support cgi scripts (perl, ASP, java, PHP, or other scripting laguages) however javascript does work. Currently there is too great of a security risk to offer CGI support at this time. In the future we will be adding a CGI only server that you can upload your scripts to and host them on our server. Look for this in the next 90-120 days.
Can I have more than one site?
1) Yes you can have as many sites as you want under the conditions that each site is used for a functioning web page and not as a storage facility for another web page.
Am I allowed to place banners on my page to earn money?
1) You may place paid banners on your page as long as you don't try to remove or tamper with the 50megs.com banner at the top of your page(s) banner.
Do my pages become your property when I put them on your server?
1) Absolutely not. Your site is your property. We make no claims to your page. Some other free web page providers make claims to your page if they are hosted on own server. 50Megs.com will NEVER try to impose on your rights to your site.
Can I put MP3 files on my site?
MP3 files are not allowed on any 50megs.com site. Most MP3 files out there are illegal. We realize that many MP3 files are original work do not infringe on copyrights of another artist. However, in the past it has been far to difficult for us to police and distinguish between the legal and illegal MP3 files. For this reason we are forced to not allow MP3 files of any kind on our server. We apologize for this, but the bad apples have spoiled it for everyone.
Do you allow adult content of any kind?
1) We do not allow adult content of any kind on www.50megs.com. Any sites found displaying such material with be deleted.
